Yogyakarta (YK) – On Friday 2nd December 2022, Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada, especially from the English study program, has held a Webinar Events Talk #42 via a zoom meeting. Webinar Events Talk #42 has a theme “The Diversity of Cultural and Art in Various Aspects of Human Life: Social & Historical Heritage”. Webinar Events Talk is a collaborative project of introductions to events management class and promotion of Indonesian Culture Class. Students got the chance to present to the public with the findings of their mini-research. Students also got a lot of opportunities to plan the event and run the activities. As a practical assignment, WET was taught in English and given to the students so that they could not only complete their academic assignments but also gain experience through useful and influential actions.
This WET takes place on Friday, December 2, 2022 from 15:00 to 17:00 pm. Both the public and Universitas Gadjah Mada students are welcome to participate in this activity. WET #42 has invited guest speaker from abroad as speakers. Chiara Massa is a guest speaker at WET who is currently studying at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. She provides knowledge related to “Studying Intercultural Communication” which is related to her study program at the University of Utrecht namely M.A. Intercultural Communication Multilingual Track. Even though the hours and places are very different, that doesn’t prevent us from holding this useful event.
In addition to Miss Chiara’s presentation, the Webinar Events Talk #42 also provides an opportunity for UGM English Study Program students batch 2022 to present the results of their mini-research at WET #42. There were 3 groups that have presented the results of their work, they discussed “Temples and Sustainable Development from the Lens of Locality”, “Disaster and cultural mitigation”, and “Traditional Arts/cultural Community and the professions”. Audiences on zoom were very enthusiastic in asking questions for each group during the Question and Answer session.
Webinar Events Talk #42 is no less interesting than the previous WET because this event also presents speakers from outside UGM; from East Nusa Tenggara, Rumario and Aloysius. They are students from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta and Universitas Nusa Cendana. Through this WET they presented “Local Identity and Cultures of East Nusa Tenggara”, they explained NTT geographically (location, etc), unique identity (what makes NTT famous and what makes people think of NTT when they hear these things) and unique social cultures in NTT (greeting culture, traditions of fighting strength, traditions of thanksgiving for God’s gifts, etc). Through this Webinar Events Talk #42, we have the opportunity to learn about Indonesian culture that we have never known or just heard of.
The students who took part in this project-based learning activity had practical experience in academic community service, public speaking, cross-cultural communication, research training, idea exchange, virtual event management, and language practices. WET, then, is an activity that values knowledge, relationships, networks, and communities. Additionally, it is an academic approach that is voluntary and values goals.
