On Monday, October 13th was held the opening of the Public Speaking training in collaboration between PT. PLN (Persero) and the Department of Languages, Arts, and Culture Management (DBSMB) Vocational College, UGM. This training is one of the products from IcoRE Center as an effort to downstream the Language and Technology Laboratory products at DBSMB. IcoRE Center is designed to facilitate the needs of the community, institutions and organizations in the fields of communication, research, and education.in the opening ceremony was attended by Muhamad Iqbal Felani, as Manager of the Research and Development Center of PT. PLN (Persero), Dr. Endang Soelistiyowati, M. Pd., as the Head of the Department of Languages, Arts, and Culture Management, the whole team of trainers and participants.
“Of course we all often have to attend and fill in events either as moderators, MCs, main speakers at seminars, workshops, talk shows, or lead discussions in national and international events. We understand that we need certain tips, certain skills, so that we can carry ourselves well. We definitely have the first experience of speaking in public, of course it’s not easy,”said Dr. Endang in her speech.“I had to speak for the first time in front of the participants of the Indonesian National Higher Education Convention in Denpasar in 2008. It was not easy. I was nervous, my body was trembling, I suddenly lost my words, I didn’t know what to say,” she added while reminding the importance of public speaking training.
The material prepared by the IcoRE Center DBSMB for this training focuses on three areas, as follows: Public Speaking for MC, Presentation for International Conference, and Public Speaking for Keynote Speakers. These three focus areas cover more about: Powerful Communication, Vocal, Performance, Gesture Techniques, Understanding Media and Tools, and Stage Fright and Crisis Management, Using Appropriate Expressions and Language (in English), Nonverbal Communication in Presentation, Understanding Presentation Media and Tools, General Overview to be a Good Keynote Speaker, Research before Action: Keynote’s Goal, Audience, Preparing Your Weapons: Presentation and Story, Preparing Hooks and Opening, Connect and Engage with Your Audience. After following all the materials, all participants have the opportunity to practice and get an evaluation note for improvement.
The trainer team involved in this training was Ahmad Muam, as the coordinator who is also the Head of the DBSMB Language and Technology Laboratory. Next is Nabilla Kusuma Vardhani as a former Public Relations Manager of the UGM Vocational School who has a lot of experiences as MC. Two other trainers namely Andri Handayani, former manager of SV UGM international affairs and expert in event management and soft skills and Jimmy Trio Putra who is the Head of Instrumentation Technology Study Program and Young Competency Assessor in the Field of Electric Power Distribution and Power Generation. Two senior lecturers outside the Vocational College were also involved in this training, namely Ahmad Agus Setiawan, Ph.D., as the Presidential Expert Staff in the field of renewable energy and I Made Andi Arsana, Ph.D., as the Head of UGM International Affairs Office who has a lot of experiences in the field of public speaking.
